The Rapid Trigger Revolution: The Introduction to Magnetic Switches for Mechanical Keyboards!!

If you are a PC enthusiast, gamer, or even a gadget lover, you must have experienced mechanical keyboards at some point in your life. Mechanical Keyboards have become the soul of new-generation PCs where precision, performance, and comfort take the first priority. The world of mechanical keyboards is continuously evolving and we are regularly getting new and innovative products in the category. However today, we are not going to discuss about mechanical keyboards as a whole, but about one of their key component, “Switches”. Mechanical Keyboards got their name from the Mechanical switches that make up the heart and core of the keyboard. Majorly, it comes down to them that finalize the typing feel of the keyboard. For decades, Mechanical Switches have been the undisputed king in the market. Life was simple with Red switches offering linear feedback, Brown bringing tactile feedback, and Blue packing in Clicky feedback. But times are changing, market is evolving. From Mechanical Switches to Optical Switches that became a good thing in the market, especially for gaming keyboards, at least for a few years. Now it’s the newest technology that’s taking the market with a clean sweep, we are talking about Magnetic Switches.

Magnetic Switch Revolution-1

Magnetic Switches are currently sweeping the market with their performance, especially in the pro-gaming scene. If you follow competitive FPS games like Valorant, Counter-Strike, etc., you must have came across the terms like “Rapid Trigger”, “Hall-Effect”, or “Magnetic Switches”. This is all related to magnetic switches. Today, we are going to talk about Magnetic Switches and also discuss how they differ from the standard Mechanical Switches. So, let’s prepare a cup of coffee and grab our reading glasses for the day!!

Understand the Revolution:-

To understand why the Magnetic Switches are revolutionary, we first need to understand how a mechanical keyboard’s works and what are its limitations. A traditional mechanical switch is a simple switch that relies of physical movement to trigger the input. When the user presses a key, a plastic stem moves dow, pushing a metal leaf until it touches another metal contact, this physical contact of metals completes the circuit, and  finally triggers the input. When the user lets the key go, the contact breaks and the input is stopped. It is a binary system, the input is either on(1), or it is off(0). While it does the job, there are a few noticeable limitations here such as Fixed Trigger point, Debounce delay, ghosting issues, and wear out(durability) issues. And that’s what led to the development of Magnetic Switches. Magnetic Switches might look identical to mechanical switches on the outside, but the internal arrangement is entirely different. There is no extra metal piece to trigger the input, there is no physical touch involved either, they use magnets embedded in the switch stem. As the user presses the key, the magnet moves closer to the Hall effect Sensor on the Keyboard’s PCB, it detects the change in strength of the magnetic field and hence triggers the input based on the settings chosen for input.

The last line might seem confusing, but let’s explain it in a simple manner. Instead of just on/off function like Mechanical Switches, the new magnetic switches work in an analog manner. With the precise Hall effect Sensors, they know exactly how far down the key is pressed, whether it is 0.1mm, 1.0mm, or full bottom out at 4.0mm. Because the keyboard knows the exact position of the key at all times, it unlocks features that mechanical switches physically cannot perform.

Key Features of Magnetic Switches:-

Rapid Trigger, Adjustable Trigger Point, Multiple Trigger Input, etc., These features change the game for good in the favor of magnetic switches. For enthusiasts and gamers who seek every millisecond movement control, these are the features that make the Magnetic switches feel special in every possible way. Let’s discuss them.

  1. Rapid Trigger Function: Trigger Multiple Inputs Simultaneously!!
Rapid Trigger function is the most interesting feature of Magnetic switches. In mechanical switches, the user has to release the key and let it reset almost fully before they can press it again. This physical travel takes time and usually introduces delay between multiple inputs. However in Magnetic switches, the reset point isn’t fixed. The input resets as soon as the user lift the finger, even if just by 0.1mm. This allow the users to spam keys or enter multiple inputs simultaneously without waiting for the previous key to physically travel back up. With such a lightning-fast input, Magnetic Switches also have no ghosting issues.
  2. Adjustable Trigger Point: Adjust the Trigger Point To Your Preferences!!
Another key feature for Magnetic switches is the Adjustable Actuation function. Users can adjust the trigger point to their liking. This can vary from ultra-sensitive input at just 0.1mm or delayed input trigger with maximum trigger travel at around 3.0mm to 3.5mm. With magnetic switches, users can change the physical behavior of the keyboard through trigger point adjustment.
  3. Dynamic Keystrokes, Multiple Input Support:-
Because the input is triggered based on the key position and it also resets dynamically as soon as the user lifts his/her finger, Magnetic Switches allow the users to assign multiple functions on a single keypress. Multiple actions such as “Walk Slowly” as well as “Sprint” can be assigned to single key press.

Well, these are the key features that sets a magnetic switch apart from a mechanical switch. Some common changes include, smoother typing feel as there is no physical contact involved at the time of trigger, fast response time, enhanced durability, and no ghosting issues. However, in the favor of mechanical switches, tactile typing feel(more physical), better clicking sound, and better modding abilities come out as key elements. Now, let’s explore some of our favorite keyboards with magnetic switches.

Magnetic Switch Revolution-3

Varmilo MUSE65:-

The Varmilo Muse65 is a premium 65% mechanical keyboard housed in a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, distinguished primarily by its advanced Gateron Magnetic switches designed for elite gaming performance. These switches enable the "Rapid Trigger" feature, which resets keys instantly upon release to eliminate input latency, providing a critical advantage in fast-paced titles like Valorant. This magnetic technology offers unparalleled customization, allowing users to adjust actuation points with 0.1mm precision across a 0.1mm to 4.0mm range, effectively turning the keyboard into a variable controller. Additionally, the "Dynamic Keystroke" function allows up to four actions per key press based on depth. While the Muse65 features beautiful thematic aesthetics like Aurora and Summit with durable PBT keycaps, it is this combination of silky-smooth linear travel and customizable, zero-latency magnetic response that makes it a powerhouse for competitive gamers. You can check out more information about the Varmilo Muse65 here.

Magnetic Switch Revolution-4

LUMINKEY Magger68 HE Plus & Ultra:-

The LUMINKEY Magger68 HE Plus and Ultra are premium 65% aluminum keyboards defined by their advanced Hall Effect magnetic technology, designed for ultra-low latency gaming. Both models feature an 8000Hz polling rate, Rapid Trigger for instant key resets, and customizable actuation points (0.1mm–3.5mm), but they differ primarily in switch type and chassis design. The Plus model utilizes Gateron Magnetic White Max switches for a lightweight linear feel, whereas the flagship Ultra upgrades to Gateron Magnetic Jade Pro switches—lauded for superior stability and sound—and features a more complex chassis with a premium back weight. Unlike typical hollow-sounding magnetic boards, both use a unique "Mag-Sync" liquid silicone internal structure to deliver a cushioned, high-quality acoustic experience. Ultimately, the Ultra offers enthusiast-grade refinement, while the Plus delivers the same elite 0.08ms rapid-trigger performance in a more streamlined package. Both these keyboards are available with us, you can check them out here.
