8Bitdo Releases Retro87 C64 Mechanical Keyboard, Paying Tribute to the Iconic Commodore 64
In a nostalgic nod to the past, 8Bitdo has launched its latest mechanical keyboard, the Retro87 C64, inspired by the legendary Commodore 64 keyboard from 1982. This release marks 8Bitdo's second foray into the mechanical keyboard market, with the initial launch event running until June 20. The Retro87 C64 captures the essence of vintage computing while incorporating modern mechanical switch technology, offering both a nostalgic aesthetic and contemporary functionality for enthusiasts and retro computing fans alike.
The Retro87 C64 stands out with its distinctly retro design, featuring a predominantly brown color scheme that mirrors the aesthetics of the original Commodore 64. Adding to its vintage appeal is a prominent red Power light and a classic retro joystick. The keyboard's 87-key layout includes a top structure and an aluminum positioning plate, ensuring both durability and a premium feel.
A notable aspect of the Retro87 C64 is its keycaps, which are made using the ABS two-color injection molding process. These keycaps feature SA ball caps, offering a classic spherical touch that recalls the tactile sensation of vintage mechanical keyboards. This thoughtful design not only amplifies the keyboard's retro charm but also delivers a distinct and enjoyable typing experience. The combination of these high-quality keycaps and the mechanical switches ensures that the Retro87 C64 stands out as both a functional tool and a nostalgic collectible for enthusiasts.
SA ball caps deliver a classic spherical touch that evokes the tactile experience of early mechanical keyboards. This design choice not only enhances the keyboard's retro look but also offers a unique typing feel, making each keystroke a blend of nostalgia and precision.
The Retro87 C64 is equipped with Kaihua BoxV2 white switches, known for their crisp and responsive feedback. The keyboard supports full-key anti-ghosting and hot-swapping, allowing users to easily replace switches without soldering. Additionally, it features a pair of large independent buttons and a game joystick, which can be customized for key mappings and combination keys. The keyboard also supports the expansion of four pairs of super keys, providing extensive customization options for enthusiasts and gamers alike.
Incorporating modern conveniences, the Retro87 C64 includes navigation keys and an industrial-style mechanical knob. This independent control console allows users to manage volume, switch key profiles, and handle Bluetooth pairing effortlessly.
Connectivity is another strong suit of the Retro87 C64, supporting 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, and a detachable USB-C to USB-A power cable. This flexibility ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, including Windows 10 and Android 9.0 and higher systems. The receiver features a dedicated magnetic storage compartment, adding a practical touch to its design.
Battery life is robust, with the keyboard capable of lasting up to a month on a single charge, making it a reliable companion for both work and play.
The 8Bitdo Retro87 C64 mechanical keyboard not only celebrates the legacy of the Commodore 64 but also brings modern functionality and customization to the forefront. Its blend of nostalgic design and contemporary features is likely to appeal to retro computing enthusiasts and mechanical keyboard fans alike. The launch event is set to end on June 20, providing a limited window for early adopters to get their hands on this unique piece of tech history.
